Our new Hoover Steamvac 5200 arrived yesterday and we’ve already used it on the entire living room. It’s a great little toy to have and my carpet feels much cleaner. My experience is detailed here.

First we had to put it together, it comes in a heavy, medium sized box and there are about 8 steps to put it together correctly. You’ll need a phillips screw driver in addition to the parts provided. The assembly process took about 10 minutes. Then it was a matter of filling the water tank (using very hot water, but not boiling), adding the cleaning solution and moving all the furniture. Moving furniture is definitely the most annoying part.

The change in appearance of your carpets will depend on how dirty they are to begin with. Ours hadn’t been shampooed in over 10 years, but they are vacuumed regularly. We have lighter carpet so the completed pass with this Hoover actually made it look a little darker. By the time we were done it looked like different carpet. It was a little darker, the nap was obviously raised and it looked like a really good vacuuming job. It was just barely damp, the machine did a great job of picking up the water and not leaving a swamp behind.

The collection tank had grayish brown water in it, but not black. We use a Dyson DC25 vacuum cleaning for regularly cleaning and it must be doing a great job.

Changing the collection tank and adding in more water to the main tank are both easy processes. The machine stops working when the collection tank is full, which instantly lets you know when it’s full. I didn’t think they tanks were too heavy, and I’m pretty much a wimp.

We used a professional cleaning solution, not the Hoover brand, and it is strong smelling. Even the next day the entire floor smells like it. After a good vacuum job over the top of the carpet I think the smell will be reduced and the carpet will be soft, fluffy and super clean. My intention is to clean it with this at least yearly, but preferably every 6 months. Using the machine is so simple I would do it more often but moving the furniture it such a pain.

Some tips: when you’re done with it, be sure to clean everything completely. Get all the dirt out of the collection tank, run clean water through the machine to get the gunk/solution out of the plastic nooks and crannies, and let everything air dry overnight. We were advised that boiling water could break the seals, and that if you don’t clean it out really well it will stop functioning as efficiently. Brushes can be replaced for about $30, I’m guessing after 10 uses or so, maybe a bit longer. They are soft bristles. We were advised to replace them once they start fraying, but I don’t know how many uses it is before that happens.

Next step is to do the bedroom and hallway carpets, but that’s for another day.
