With all the media attention about how credit card companies are giving their customers the shaft lately, I think it’s time that everyone knew about how to take full advantage of their credit cards and get back a little for themselves.
Your best bet is to pay off your balance in full every month. If you aren’t able to do that then you should work hard to pay down your balances so that you can. Stop spending money on non essentials, get a second job if you must, but pay off those cards. Then you can start using them as you should.
Credit is a tool. It becomes a weapon if you don’t use the tool wisely. It can destroy your life and your family’s so be careful.
I sometimes spend a lot of money but I always know that I can pay it off when the bill comes. I don’t spend more than I have. I save up for what I want and pay it off right away. If I need to use a 0% interest plan then I carefully figure out how much I’ll need to save each month in order to pay it off when the 0% offer is over.
All other purchases are made on the credit card that gives me the most points. For instance, gas purchases are made on my Discover card with the 5% cash back for gas offer. Everything else goes on my Chase card that gives me 1% back which is then turned into cash in my pocket. That cash can be used for anything, but I tend to use it for Christmas gifts for my family.
I am considered a credit card deadbeat because I make money off them, they don’t make money off me. No late fees, no over limit fees, no interest because I pay in full. It’s the only way to be. Work hard to get there and you’ll enjoy life a little more. Living within your means isn’t hard, it just requires a little discipline.
